Sundarban tiger reserve, the land of
boundless beauty and picturesque landscapes is the home to royal Bengal tigers,
which is widespread through 2585 sq km. tigers lurk in the impenetrable depths
of the mangrove forests and also swim in the delta’s innumerable channels.
Sometimes they do kill the villagers and their livestock, tigers are typically
shy.
The Sunderban forest covers around 10,000
sq.km of which 60% is in Bangladesh and the remaining is in India. After
reading Amitav Ghosh’s “The Hungry Tide”, it is an enigma for all nature lovers
who want to visit it once in their lifetime.

Best time to
visit
The best time to visit the Sunderban tiger
reserve is between November and March. At this time, the weather is very
pleasant, comfortable and scenic beauty is awesome. It is not advisable to
travel Sunderban between summer and monsoon as it is very hot and humid.

The mangrove vegetation of
Sundarban consists of 64 plant species. Kankra and Khalsi are two flowers,
which can be commonly seen in the months of April and May. The other common
plants and trees are Dhundal, Passur, Garjan, Sundari and Goran. Sundari trees
are commonly found and thus the name of the national park is Sundarban. The
tiger reserve is known for a huge number of tigers. An estimated 270 tigers are
found here. Other than tigers, one can find fishing cat, spotted deer, wild
boar, gangetic dolphin, water monitor, estuarian crocodile, river terrapin, and
many more.

Sajnekhali- It is the best known place for
bird sanctuary which is the most preferable place to experience accommodative
facilities. There are different watch towers at different zones for getting a
glimpse of the royal tigers.
Bhagbatpur crocodile project- A crocodile
breeding farm in the Bhagbatpur area, this place is easily accessible from
Namkhanaand is a hatchery of the largest estuarine crocodile in the world.
Piyali Island - the gateway to Sundarbans,
Piyali is being developed as a tourist complex and is located 72 kms from
Kolkata, lying very closer to Sajnekhali. The Piyali River flows through the
island to join the Matla River. At Piyali Island, people can have a nature's
walk, enjoy a boat ride, bird watching and savor the village life.
